Peace and Sustainable Development in Education: A Visible or Invisible Relationship

The concepts of peace and sustainable development are an integral part of the dialogue on international development, and they are also reflected in the curricula of several countries. This research seeks to identify the relationship between these two concepts within the field of education, and the way this relationship becomes evident in educational practice. The case examined is education for sustainable development in Israel, which has a national program within the Ministry of Education. Taking the Green Network — one of the organizations responsible for teacher training in this field — as a point of reference, the study seeks to understand this relationship and its nature. The findings are the product of an analysis of official Israeli documents for initial contextualization, together with online questionnaires and semi-structured interviews with education-for-sustainable-development trainers. They reveal the great importance of context when addressing a subject such as peace, and how education for sustainability could hold a fundamental place in achieving it.
